The Government of India has appointed 1993-batch Telangana cadre IPS officer Mahesh Dixit as the next Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB). He will succeed Tapan Deka, whose tenure ends on June 30, and will serve a two-year term.
Dixit is currently serving as the Special Director of the IB and is regarded as one of India's most experienced intelligence officers. He has spent most of his policing career in the Intelligence Bureau, handling critical assignments related to counter-terrorism, national security and intelligence operations.
Before his promotion to the IB headquarters in New Delhi, Dixit headed the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau in Jammu and Kashmir. He played a significant role in intelligence assessments and security planning following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. He also supervised key intelligence responsibilities during the G-20 Tourism Working Group meeting held in Srinagar in 2023.
Throughout his career, Dixit has handled sensitive assignments in the Northeast, Ladakh and anti-Naxal operations. His strong field intelligence network and expertise in counter-terrorism contributed to his promotion as Special Director last year. He will now lead India's premier domestic intelligence agency.
