A 38-year-old man has died after being attacked by a great white shark near Rottnest Island off the coast of western Australia, authorities confirmed.
The attack happened shortly before 10am local time on Saturday near Horseshoe Reef, a popular diving and fishing location west of Perth.
According to police, the victim was transported by boat to Geordie Bay Jetty, where emergency responders and paramedics attempted to revive him with CPR. He later died at the scene.
Officials from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development said the shark involved was identified as a great white measuring approximately four metres in length.
Emergency crews, including ambulance and rescue teams, were seen gathered near the area following the incident.
The attack is the first fatal shark attack reported in Western Australia since March last year, when a surfer was killed at Wharton Beach in a remote coastal region.
Australia has experienced several shark incidents in recent years, particularly along its eastern coastline. Earlier this year, multiple attacks led to temporary beach closures across parts of New South Wales.
Last September, an experienced surfer in his 50s was killed in a rare fatal shark attack near Sydney. Before that, Sydney’s previous deadly shark attack occurred in 2022, marking the city’s first fatal incident in nearly six decades at the time.
According to national health data, Australia records an average of around 20 shark attacks annually, with most incidents occurring along the country’s east and southeast coasts.
