Iran began the funeral procession for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran, drawing massive crowds of mourners as authorities praised national unity and reiterated calls for justice following his death during the recent conflict with Israel and the United States.
After lying in state for two days at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla religious complex, Khamenei’s funeral procession started its journey across the capital. Large numbers of supporters gathered along the route to pay their final respects.
State media reported that mourners assembled in Imam Hussein Square, where anti-US and anti-Israel slogans were displayed. Protesters also carried placards featuring senior American and Israeli leaders.
Thousands had already attended public mourning ceremonies at the Grand Mosalla, where members of Khamenei’s family who were killed alongside him were also honoured.
Iranian authorities are using the weeklong funeral ceremonies to project national unity during the ongoing ceasefire with the United States. Senior officials described the public turnout as a symbol of resilience and support for the country's leadership.
The funeral events will continue in the religious city of Qom before moving to Iraq’s holy cities of Najaf and Karbala. Khamenei is scheduled to be buried later this week in his hometown of Mashhad.
Three of Khamenei’s sons appeared publicly during the ceremonies, while the absence of his successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, drew attention. Officials have stated that he was injured during the air strikes that killed his father.
Iranian military leaders have vowed to continue seeking justice, while public calls for accountability have remained a central theme throughout the mourning ceremonies.
