Messi Hat-Trick Powers Argentina to 3-0 Win Over Algeria

Kansas City: Defending champions Argentina kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Algeria, thanks to a brilliant hat-trick from captain Lionel Messi.

Playing in a record sixth World Cup, the 38-year-old forward delivered a memorable performance. Messi thought he had scored in the eighth minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside. He soon made amends with a trademark solo run and powerful finish from outside the box to give Argentina the lead.

Messi doubled Argentina’s advantage in the 60th minute, tapping in a rebound after Alexis Mac Allister’s shot was saved. He completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute with a low strike from outside the penalty area.

The goal took Messi to 16 World Cup goals, drawing level with former Germany striker Miroslav Klose on the tournament's all-time scoring chart. He received a standing ovation when substituted shortly after completing his hat-trick.

Algeria had an early goal ruled out for offside and struggled to create major chances against Argentina’s defence throughout the match.

The appearance was also Messi’s 200th match for Argentina. The world champions will next face Austria in their second group-stage fixture.
