Monsoon Exposes Kanpur's Civic Failures as Roads Cave In, Apartment Evacuated

The first spell of monsoon rain has exposed serious civic infrastructure failures across Kanpur, with roads collapsing, widespread waterlogging disrupting daily life and a residential apartment being evacuated after its basement gave way.

Heavy rainfall flooded several parts of the city, affecting traffic movement and leaving commuters stranded for hours. Waterlogged roads, unfinished civic projects and damaged drainage systems led to severe congestion across major intersections, while several vehicles broke down after getting stuck in flooded streets.

Authorities also reported road cave-ins at multiple locations, including key routes under ongoing infrastructure projects, making travel dangerous. In Kakadeo, a four-storey residential apartment was evacuated after part of its basement collapsed, raising concerns over structural safety. Residents alleged nearby construction activity contributed to the incident, while Metro Rail officials denied any connection.

In another incident, a nearly 40-year-old boundary wall of the Ordnance Equipment Factory in the city's Phoolbagh area collapsed during the rain. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as traffic was minimal at the time.

The heavy rainfall once again highlighted concerns over drainage management, road quality and urban planning, with residents questioning the preparedness of civic authorities for the monsoon season.
