Social activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi on Saturday after his health worsened during the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike. A brief confrontation took place between protesters and police during the transfer.
Wangchuk has been demanding accountability in the NEET paper leak case and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Doctors said he has lost around 9.5 kilograms, raising concerns over his health.
The Delhi High Court had directed authorities to conduct daily medical examinations and provide treatment whenever necessary. Following these directions, Wangchuk was shifted to the hospital.
After his transfer, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Deepke began his own hunger strike, alleging that police mistreated Wangchuk and protesters. Delhi Police, however, stated that the operation was carried out peacefully and in compliance with the High Court's order.
Three AISA students—Neha, Ameen, and Manish—continue their hunger strike. Doctors have advised hospitalisation for Neha due to severe hypoglycaemia, while the other two remain under medical observation.
Security has been tightened outside Safdarjung Hospital. Protest organisers have announced that the planned Parliament March on July 20 will proceed as scheduled.
