A US federal judge has ordered the release of Palestinian-American activist and mosque leader Salah Sarsour, who had been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since March.
US District Judge James Patrick Hanlon ruled that Sarsour had presented a substantial claim that he was targeted because of his public support for Palestine, which is protected under the First Amendment of the US Constitution. The judge stated that concerns about foreign policy do not automatically override free speech protections.
Sarsour, the president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, was arrested on March 31 and transferred to a detention facility in Indiana while facing deportation proceedings. He has lived in the United States for nearly 32 years and holds legal permanent resident status.
The Department of Homeland Security accused him of failing to disclose a past conviction by an Israeli military court during his immigration process. Sarsour has denied the allegations. Rights groups have criticized the case, arguing that it reflects a broader crackdown on pro-Palestinian voices in the United States.
Following the ruling, Sarsour was released and allowed to return to Wisconsin while his legal case continues. In a statement, he described the decision as a victory for free speech and vowed to continue advocating for Palestinian rights.
