The investigation into the death of bank employee Manas Bajpai, his wife Divya and his sister in Lucknow's Husria area has brought several new details to light. According to police, Manas had reportedly been trying to obtain a weapon for several days before the incident.
Investigators are examining how the weapon was obtained and who may have been in contact with Manas during that period. Police are also looking into his movements and conversations before the incident.
According to police, Manas's stress increased after a court hearing held on August 18. People who knew him reportedly said that he was deeply troubled by the ongoing marital and legal dispute involving his wife.
One of his acquaintances told investigators that Manas had been away from the city for work-related reasons and learned about the court date after returning. The acquaintance reportedly noticed a significant change in his behaviour in the days immediately before the incident but did not expect the situation to escalate so severely.
Long-running marital dispute
Manas and Divya were married in 2017. The couple later faced repeated marital disagreements. Family members said that there were periods when the two attempted to reconcile, but the underlying differences remained unresolved.
In 2018, when Manas's mother was seriously ill, Divya reportedly returned to live with him. However, tensions continued over several family-related issues.
After Manas's mother died in 2019, the relationship reportedly became strained again. The couple later resumed communication and lived together for some time, but their dispute resurfaced in 2025.
Divya reportedly left the house in November 2025. In January, she filed cases in the family court relating to return of streedhan, maintenance and divorce.
In March, Manas reportedly approached the court expressing his desire to resume living together under Hindu customs, but the two could not reach an agreement.
Concern over sister's future
Investigators are also examining Manas's relationship with his sister. Police suspect that he had been deeply concerned about her future and who would take responsibility for her care.
People who reached the residence after the incident found Manas and his sister dead inside a room. Police recovered weapons from the scene and began collecting forensic and other technical evidence.
Police examining multiple angles
Deputy Commissioner of Police, East, Dr Diksha Sharma said that investigators were examining every aspect of the case. The investigation includes the source of the weapon, Manas's activities after the court hearing, his conversations with acquaintances and the circumstances surrounding the family dispute.
Investigators are also examining who Manas had been in contact with before the incident and what factors may have contributed to the sudden deterioration in his behaviour.
Digital records, forensic evidence and other available material are also being examined as part of the investigation.
The case has brought renewed attention to the impact of prolonged family disputes, legal proceedings and emotional stress. Police are now working to reconstruct the sequence of events and establish the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
