Pakistan has claimed that its security forces killed 29 fighters during a ground operation and precision air strikes along the Afghanistan border. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the operation was launched in response to recent attacks by armed groups across the country.
According to Pakistan three targets in the Afghan provinces of Paktia Paktika and Kunar were destroyed during the strikes. However the Taliban administration in Afghanistan claimed the attacks killed at least 36 civilians and injured 163 others.
The operation came a day after gunmen attacked the Pakistan Rangers headquarters in Karachi killing three soldiers. Pakistani security forces later killed three attackers and arrested another suspect identified as an Afghan national.
Jamaat ul Ahrar a breakaway faction of the Pakistan Taliban claimed responsibility for the Karachi attack. Islamabad maintains that militant groups operate from Afghan territory while Kabul continues to reject the allegations.
The latest military action is expected to deepen tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan despite repeated international efforts to reduce border hostilities.
