A deadly building collapse in the Philippines has left at least three people dead while rescue teams continue searching for 17 missing workers trapped beneath the rubble.
The incident occurred at a multistorey building under construction in Angeles City, located north of Manila. Emergency crews have been carrying out difficult search and rescue operations as authorities investigate the cause of the collapse.
Officials said two victims were pulled from the debris during rescue efforts. One survivor initially showed signs of life after being rescued but later died, while another suffered cardiac arrest while still trapped beneath the rubble.
Rescue teams are also attempting to recover another body detected under the collapsed structure. Authorities said the official death toll may rise as operations continue.
Thermal scanning equipment has detected possible signs of breathing and heartbeats beneath the debris, raising hopes that additional survivors may still be alive.
Most of the missing are believed to be construction workers who were on duty when the structure suddenly gave way. Authorities said nearly 70 people were employed at the site, although many workers had already left for the weekend before the collapse happened.
Rescue officials described the operation as extremely dangerous because any sudden movement could shift the unstable debris and crush trapped victims or rescuers.
For that reason, crews are relying heavily on manual rescue methods instead of heavy machinery. Officials said excavators and mechanical equipment may only be used later if no more survivors are found.
Families of the missing workers have gathered near the site, anxiously waiting for updates about their loved ones.
One woman searching for her husband said her young children continue asking when their father will return home, but she has no answers.
Local authorities are also trying to locate the building owner as part of the ongoing investigation into the disaster.
