Rahul Gandhi Accuses Government of Turning Delhi Into a Jail

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has launched a fresh attack on the central government, accusing it of turning Delhi into a jail through extensive security arrangements. His remarks come amid political tensions over electoral fairness and the opposition's allegations of vote theft. Gandhi claimed that the deployment of police personnel and the treatment of protesters and young people had raised serious questions about the government's approach to dissent.

Rahul Gandhi said the government was making a major mistake. Referring to the scale of police deployment, he remarked that even if 20,000 to 30,000 police personnel were stationed on the streets, it would only make the situation more visible to the public. He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was determined to ensure the security of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Gandhi further claimed that increased security around the election chief would not prevent the opposition from questioning those responsible for the decisions and the system surrounding him.

Gandhi also claimed that he had received reports of police personnel being unhappy because they were allegedly being instructed to use force against young people, while members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh were supposedly being given greater freedom. These statements form part of Gandhi's allegations, and independent confirmation of the claims was not established in the statement.

Questions Over the Chief Election Commissioner's Position

Rahul Gandhi questioned why Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was continuing in office. He said the opposition had repeatedly raised concerns about the fairness of elections and alleged vote theft. Gandhi claimed that such questions were not limited to opposition parties and referred to questions allegedly raised by two election commissioners as well.

In his remarks, Gandhi levelled allegations of corruption against Gyanesh Kumar and said the opposition would continue to question his past and his conduct. He made it clear that the INDIA bloc did not intend to withdraw from the issue. The central themes of his statement were the role of the Election Commission, the credibility of the electoral process and the accountability of constitutional institutions.

INDIA Bloc Plans to File a Petition in the Supreme Court

Rahul Gandhi said that he and the Congress president had written to the Chief Justice of India, expressing concerns about what they described as threats to Indian democracy and the fairness of elections. According to Gandhi, they received a response from the Chief Justice and were advised to file a petition.

He said leaders of the INDIA bloc would approach the Supreme Court together and submit the petition. Gandhi indicated that the opposition wanted to place its concerns about the electoral process before the judiciary and seek accountability. The precise contents of the petition, its filing status and any subsequent court proceedings would need to be established through official information.

Claims About Police and Security Personnel

Rahul Gandhi also claimed that he had received support from a section of police personnel. He said around 50 per cent of police officers were allegedly telling the opposition that its actions were justified and should continue. Referring to the police, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, the Central Reserve Police Force and the public, Gandhi argued that many people understood the opposition's concerns about electoral fairness.

He also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and some members of the Election Commission of playing a role in what he described as vote theft and an attempt to undermine the country's democratic system. These remain political allegations made by Gandhi and should not be treated as independently established facts without supporting evidence.

 Political Tensions Over Electoral Fairness

Rahul Gandhi's remarks underline the continuing political confrontation over the credibility of elections and allegations of vote theft. The INDIA bloc is preparing to take its concerns to the Supreme Court, while Gandhi has also challenged the government's security arrangements in Delhi and the role of the Chief Election Commissioner.

The next stage of the dispute will depend on the filing and contents of the proposed petition, the responses of the concerned parties and any developments in court. For now, Gandhi has reiterated that the opposition intends to continue raising questions about electoral fairness and the accountability of institutions.
