The controversy surrounding the alleged use of pellet guns during a student protest in Delhi has resurfaced after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi approached the police on Friday demanding an FIR and a formal investigation.
Gandhi reached the DCP office at the Parliament Street Police Station complex accompanied by Sahil Lochav, a student who has alleged that he suffered pellet injuries during the July 20 CJP protest. Gandhi sought action against those responsible and urged the police to formally register the complaint.
Rahul Gandhi stages sit-in after FIR is not registered
According to reports, after the complaint was not immediately registered, Gandhi sat on a dharna outside the Parliament Street Police Station. The student who alleged that he was injured during the protest was also present.
Gandhi has been pressing for an investigation into the alleged use of force against protesters. Sources quoted in reports said he indicated that he would continue seeking registration of the case until his complaint was formally accepted.
Case linked to July 20 CJP protest
The dispute relates to the July 20 CJP-led student march from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament. The protesters were raising issues related to examinations and education.
The demonstration later witnessed a confrontation between protesters and security personnel. Some protesters subsequently alleged that pellet-firing weapons were used during the police action and that several people were injured.
Rahul Gandhi has previously raised the issue publicly and appeared alongside students who claimed to have suffered pellet injuries.
Delhi Police has denied using pellet guns
Delhi Police has maintained a different position on the matter. The police had denied allegations that its personnel used pellet guns against protesters and described reports claiming such use as false and misleading.
However, subsequent reports citing police records and other material alleged that pellet rounds were used during the protest. A reported General Diary entry referred to the firing of rounds containing plastic pellets during the crowd-control operation. The claims have added to the political dispute over what happened during the protest and who authorised the action.
Medical evidence also under discussion
Medical records cited in reports have also become part of the controversy. Some hospital documentation was reported to have recorded injuries described as pellet wounds. These claims have strengthened calls for an independent examination of the circumstances surrounding the alleged use of pellet ammunition.
