Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s planned visit to the United States has been cancelled after the Ministry of External Affairs did not grant the required political clearance, according to the Telangana Chief Minister’s Office.
The CMO said the ministry denied permission for the US leg of the visit on the grounds that clearance from a “political angle” had been denied. As a result, the official Telangana Rising delegation accompanying the Chief Minister had to cancel its proposed US programme.
Revanth Reddy had begun a 10-day UK-US tour on August 20. The proposed visit was aimed at promoting Telangana as a destination for investment, education, skills development and international institutional partnerships.
The state government had sought central approval for the international tour in accordance with the applicable protocol. While the UK portion of the visit was cleared, permission for the US portion was withheld.
With the US trip cancelled, the Chief Minister is now expected to return to Hyderabad from London on August 23. Earlier, he had planned to travel from the UK to the US and return to Hyderabad on August 30.
What was planned for the US visit?
The proposed US itinerary included meetings and visits involving major educational and institutional bodies. The programme was expected to include visits to Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
A meeting with a Virginia Tech University team in Boston was also scheduled for August 25. In addition, Revanth Reddy was expected to participate in a diaspora event in New York organised by the US chapter of the Indian Overseas Congress.
The Telangana government had presented the trip as part of its wider effort to attract investment, build international academic partnerships and strengthen opportunities in education and skills development.
What was planned in the UK?
Revanth Reddy reached London on August 20 to begin the first leg of his overseas tour. His UK schedule included programmes linked to Oxford University’s Blavatnik School of Government, the University of Cambridge, the University of London and London Business School.
A football-related programme at the Emirates Stadium was also part of the planned schedule.
With the US visit cancelled, however, the international tour has been shortened and the Chief Minister will return to Telangana after completing his UK engagements.
What did the Telangana government say?
The Telangana CMO said that the state had followed the required process and sought central approval for both legs of the international tour. The Ministry of External Affairs cleared the UK visit but did not grant political clearance for the US visit.
The Centre has not publicly provided a detailed explanation for withholding the US clearance. The information released so far only refers to the absence of clearance from a political angle.
Revanth recently met US Ambassador
The development comes shortly after Revanth Reddy met US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on August 19. During the meeting, he raised issues concerning H-1B visa processing, renewals and stamping, as well as visa appointments for students from Telangana travelling to the United States for higher education.
The cancellation of the US visit is now likely to draw political attention in Telangana, particularly given the Congress government's relationship with the BJP-led Union government. However, no detailed political reason for the denial has been publicly disclosed by the Centre.
For now, Revanth Reddy's US programme stands cancelled, while the Chief Minister is expected to return to Hyderabad after completing his UK engagements.
