Despite weak monsoon activity across Uttar Pradesh, heavy rainfall in the Himalayan region has caused water levels in major rivers to rise sharply. The Ganga, Yamuna, Ghaghara and Saryu rivers are flowing above normal levels, increasing the flood threat in several districts.
In Prayagraj, river water has reached the ghats and submerged shops and platforms used for religious rituals. Devotees were seen offering prayers while sitting on partially submerged wooden platforms.
In Ballia, severe riverbank erosion along the Ghaghara and Saryu rivers forced nearly 150 families in Bansdih to leave their homes and shift to safer locations. Local authorities have started relief and rehabilitation measures.
The Malan River in Bijnor is also in spate, with water flowing over small bridges and disrupting traffic. The Meteorological Department has issued a rain alert for 25 districts, while temperatures in other parts of the state may cross 40°C due to humidity.
According to the IMD, dry winds from Pakistan have weakened monsoon activity over western Uttar Pradesh. Light rainfall is expected in eastern districts, while western UP may witness a dry spell for the next three to four days.
Scientists also warned that developing El Niño conditions could reduce overall rainfall this season. Uttar Pradesh is likely to receive nearly 8% below-normal rainfall between June and September compared to the seasonal average.
