New Delhi/Leh: Social activist Sonam Wangchuk has returned to his native village in Ladakh after ending his 26-day hunger strike in support of students protesting over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations. Soon after reaching home, he released a video message urging people not to become blind followers of any political ideology.
Wangchuk said that his recent appreciation of the Vande Bharat Express and the Chenab Railway Bridge was unnecessarily linked to politics. According to him, appreciating a good development project should never be interpreted as political support for any government.
He stated that every citizen should have the courage to praise good work and criticize mistakes, regardless of which political party is in power. He urged people to judge issues objectively instead of becoming devoted supporters of one side.
The activist said that nation-building is a collective responsibility and cannot be achieved by the ruling party or the opposition alone. Citizens, he added, must develop the ability to distinguish between right and wrong with an open mind.
Wangchuk also reminded the Centre about the written assurances given during negotiations that led to the end of his hunger strike. He reiterated that no legal action should be taken against peaceful student protesters and called for meaningful reforms in the examination system.
He further renewed his demand for compensation to the families of students who allegedly lost their lives following the NEET examination controversy. He said such families deserve justice and support.
Concluding his message, Wangchuk emphasized that promises hold value only when implemented on time. Delayed action, he said, reduces public trust and weakens the purpose of commitments. He expressed hope that the government would honour its assurances without unnecessary delay.
