Supreme Court Seeks Timeline From EC on TMC Name and Election Symbol Dispute

The Supreme Court has sought clarification from the Election Commission regarding the timeline for resolving the ongoing dispute over the name and election symbol of the Trinamool Congress.

The matter came before the court in connection with a petition filed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. During the hearing, the court asked the Election Commission to explain how much time it would require to decide the dispute involving the party name and election symbol.

The dispute concerns two factions associated with the All India Trinamool Congress. Both sides have claims regarding the party’s identity, including its name and election symbol. The matter is currently before the Election Commission.

The Supreme Court has given the Election Commission time until Monday to provide information on when the matter can be resolved. The court’s direction makes the timeline for the Commission’s proceedings an important part of the next stage of the case.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court also referred to the factional dispute involving Shiv Sena. That dispute had similarly involved competing claims over the party name and election symbol.

Dispute Ahead of West Bengal By-Elections

The issue has become particularly significant because West Bengal is scheduled to hold by-elections in Nandigram and Rejinagar. The by-elections are scheduled for October 6, 2026, while the results are scheduled to be announced on October 9.

The party name and election symbol are important elements of the electoral process because they help identify political parties and candidates on the ballot.

In view of the factional dispute, the Election Commission has made an interim arrangement concerning the use of the All India Trinamool Congress name and its traditional ‘Flowers and Grass’ symbol.

Under the temporary arrangement described in the case, the faction led by Mamata Banerjee has been allotted the name ‘Mamata All India Trinamool Congress’ and the ‘football player’ symbol for the by-elections.

The faction associated with Arup Roy has been allotted the name ‘Democratic Trinamool Congress’ and the ‘envelope’ symbol.

These arrangements are being treated as temporary measures in the context of the upcoming by-elections, while the broader dispute over the party’s identity remains under consideration.

 Election Commission’s Response Awaited

Following the Supreme Court’s direction, the Election Commission will have to indicate how much time it may need to complete the proceedings concerning the party name and election symbol.

The Commission is required to consider the claims made by the two sides along with the relevant documents and other material available before it.

The Supreme Court has not, through the direction described here, made a final determination about which faction will receive the disputed party name and symbol. The final outcome will depend on the proceedings before the Election Commission and any further legal developments.

The next response from the Election Commission regarding the proposed timeline is therefore significant for the case. The matter is also being closely watched because of its connection with the upcoming West Bengal by-elections.
