Uncertainty surrounding Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible visit to India has deepened after the Rashtrapati Bhavan withdrew a statement that appeared to indicate preparations for his formal welcome.
On Friday, August 21, the President’s Secretariat announced that the Change of Guard Ceremony at the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan would not take place on August 22 because a full rehearsal for the ceremonial welcome of the Bangladeshi prime minister had been scheduled. The statement was later withdrawn.
The development immediately fuelled speculation over whether Rahman’s proposed visit to New Delhi was close to being finalised. However, neither India nor Bangladesh had formally confirmed the visit at that point.
Bangladesh's Prime Minister's Press Secretary A.A.M. Saleh subsequently said that no final decision had been made regarding the visit. He said Dhaka was awaiting New Delhi's response on issues that remain important to the bilateral relationship.
What did Rashtrapati Bhavan say?
The initial statement said that the regular Change of Guard ceremony would not be held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan forecourt on August 22 because preparations were being made for a ceremonial welcome for the Bangladeshi prime minister.
The notice was released through India's Press Information Bureau at around 2:25 pm on Friday and was subsequently recalled. No immediate official explanation was provided for the withdrawal.
The wording of the notice attracted attention because the proposed visit had not been formally announced by either government. The reference to a ceremonial rehearsal therefore appeared to reveal preparations for a visit that was still under diplomatic discussion.
What has Bangladesh said?
Bangladesh has maintained that no final decision has been taken on Tarique Rahman's India trip. The Prime Minister's press secretary said Dhaka was waiting for a response from New Delhi before moving forward.
Bangladeshi officials have previously indicated that the diplomatic environment needs to be favourable for the visit to take place. Discussions between the two governments remain underway.
Why was the India visit being discussed?
Reports over the past several days had suggested that Tarique Rahman could travel to New Delhi between August 23 and 25. Such a visit would potentially become his first official trip to India and could mark an important attempt to restore high-level political dialogue between the two neighbours.
The proposed visit comes against the backdrop of strained India-Bangladesh relations following the political upheaval in Bangladesh in 2024 and the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India.
Dhaka has been seeking the extradition of Hasina and other fugitives, making the issue an important part of the bilateral diplomatic conversation.
Why would the visit matter?
A visit by Tarique Rahman could provide an opportunity for direct discussions on trade, border management, security, water-sharing issues and regional cooperation.
However, the latest developments make clear that the visit cannot yet be treated as officially confirmed. The withdrawal of the Rashtrapati Bhavan notice and Bangladesh's statement that no final decision has been taken indicate that discussions are still continuing.
For now, attention remains on New Delhi and Dhaka for a formal announcement on the dates and schedule of the proposed visit.
