New Delhi: The temporary restriction imposed on Telegram ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination has sparked a major debate, with the platform now challenging the decision in the Delhi High Court.
The Indian government suspended access to Telegram until June 22, citing concerns that certain groups were using the platform to spread fake paper leak claims and scam students during the examination process.
Telegram, however, argues that blocking the entire platform is an excessive measure. The company maintains that authorities should target specific channels and accounts involved in illegal activities rather than affecting millions of legitimate users.
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov criticized the move, saying that more than 150 million users in India are being punished while those responsible for paper leaks can simply migrate to other applications.
The legal battle has now reached the Delhi High Court, where the validity and proportionality of the government's decision will come under scrutiny.
