Meerut. The arrest of Mohammad Zafar, who is suspected of having links with Jaish-e-Mohammed, has led security agencies to investigate a possible Pakistan-based terror network and alleged plans to cross the border. According to the investigation, Zafar was allegedly preparing to travel to Pakistan and was attempting to obtain a passport from Bihar. Investigators are also examining information about an alleged plan for him to meet Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar after reaching Pakistan. The allegations are currently part of an ongoing investigation and are yet to be established through the completion of the probe.
Zafar’s arrest comes amid a wider security operation in western Uttar Pradesh. Around 16 suspected terrorists have reportedly been detained in different parts of the region. Investigators are now trying to establish whether these individuals were connected to one another, who was allegedly coordinating them and whether the network was being prepared for a larger terror-related operation.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in a social media post that security agencies had dismantled a network allegedly supported by Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI and associated with gangster Shahzad Bhatti. He said that more than 200 operatives had been arrested and alleged plans for dangerous attacks had been disrupted.
According to the Home Minister, coordinated operations were conducted across 14 states. The objective was to identify and dismantle networks suspected of providing contacts, logistics, financial assistance or other forms of support to terrorist elements and their associates. Agencies are now examining the backgrounds of those arrested, their communication records, financial transactions and possible links with individuals operating from outside India.
The alleged passport connection in Bihar has become an important part of the investigation into Zafar. Investigators are trying to determine what documents were used in the passport process, how identity and address details were arranged and whether any other person or organised network helped him in the process.
The alleged plan to meet Masood Azhar has added another significant dimension to the investigation. Security agencies are examining Zafar’s digital records, communication history and other evidence to determine whether he had been in contact with members of a Pakistan-based extremist network and what his alleged role may have been.
Investigators are also looking beyond the individuals already detained. The focus is reportedly on identifying people who may have provided financial, logistical, technical or other assistance to the suspected network. Agencies are also examining whether the network had links with similar groups operating in other states.
The operation highlights the security agencies’ continued focus on disrupting suspected terror networks before they can carry out attacks. Further arrests or revelations could emerge as interrogation and investigation continue. At present, the alleged Pakistan connection, passport-related activity and reported contacts with extremist elements remain under investigation.
