Turkiye ended their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign on a high note by defeating the United States 3-2 with a dramatic stoppage-time winner in the final Group D fixture.
The United States, who had already secured top spot in the group and qualification for the knockout stage, made several changes to their starting lineup. They took the lead inside three minutes when defender Auston Trusty scored his first international goal from a corner.
Turkiye responded quickly through Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler, who levelled the score in the 10th minute after a well-worked move. Baris Alper Yilmaz then completed the turnaround in the 31st minute to give Turkiye a 2-1 lead before halftime.
The Americans came back strongly after the break. Sebastian Berhalter equalised in the 49th minute with a powerful strike from outside the box. Later, Christian Pulisic returned from injury and created several dangerous opportunities, but the hosts failed to regain the lead.
As the match appeared headed for a draw, Kaan Ayhan struck deep into stoppage time from close range to seal a memorable victory for Turkiye.
Although already eliminated from the tournament, Turkiye finished their campaign with pride, while the United States now shift their focus to the Round of 32 clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
