Following the agreement between the United States and Iran to end hostilities, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has launched a large-scale operation to evacuate more than 11,000 sailors stranded in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to reports, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez said the mission is being coordinated with Iran, Oman, other coastal states in the region, the United States and maritime industry stakeholders.
Dominguez stated that the necessary security guarantees have been secured and navigation conditions have been thoroughly assessed to support safe evacuation and maritime operations.
The move comes after months of disruption in one of the world's most important shipping routes, which was closed by Iran following the outbreak of conflict earlier this year.
Although shipping traffic is gradually resuming, disagreements remain over the future administration of the Strait of Hormuz. During a visit to the United Arab Emirates, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated that Iran should not be allowed to impose tolls or transit fees on vessels using the international waterway.
Rubio argued that international shipping lanes must remain free from unilateral charges. However, Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that despite agreements aimed at preventing future disruptions, the strait would not return to its pre-conflict status.
Observers believe that issues related to control, navigation rights and possible transit fees will remain key points of contention as negotiations between Washington and Tehran continue.
