The United States' top diplomat in Taiwan, Raymond Greene, has urged the self-governed island to become a "hornet's nest" of drones to deter potential military conflict with China. He described drones as a game-changing capability that could significantly strengthen Taiwan's security and regional stability.
Speaking at a drone forum in Taichung, Greene said modern warfare has demonstrated the effectiveness of unmanned systems, pointing to Ukraine as an example of how drones have helped defenders withstand stronger military forces.
Greene added that the US and Taiwan should work together to build a democratic drone manufacturing ecosystem that enhances collective deterrence. According to him, deploying air, surface and underwater drones would be one of the strongest ways to discourage future aggression.
Taiwan's government has proposed a new $6.59 billion drone programme through 2031 to expand surveillance, coastal defence and unmanned maritime capabilities, although political disagreements over defence spending continue in the legislature.
