Washington. The United States military has carried out another strike on a vessel suspected of drug smuggling in the eastern Pacific Ocean, killing three people, according to US Southern Command. The operation is part of an ongoing campaign targeting what US authorities describe as narcotics-trafficking networks operating along maritime routes.
US officials said the vessel was travelling through a known drug-trafficking corridor when it was targeted. A video released by the military showed the boat being struck and engulfed in flames. No US personnel were injured during the operation.
The strike is the latest in a series of operations launched under the Trump administration's anti-cartel strategy. According to reports, hundreds of people have been killed in similar actions since the campaign began.
However, the operations have sparked criticism from human rights groups, legal experts and some lawmakers, who question the legality of using military force against suspected traffickers without publicly presenting evidence of criminal activity.
The Pentagon's inspector general is reviewing aspects of the targeting process, while calls for greater transparency regarding the strikes continue to grow.
