What Is Nayara Energy? The Indian Refiner Reportedly Supplying Fuel That Reached Russia

Nayara Energy, one of India's largest private oil refining and fuel retail companies, has come into the spotlight after reports claimed that gasoline refined at its Gujarat refinery was sold to Russia through international traders.

According to reports, the fuel reached Russia at a time when the country is facing fuel shortages caused by repeated Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries and energy infrastructure. While Nayara Energy has not officially confirmed the sales, India's Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said Indian companies are not directly supplying fuel to Russia, but Indian-origin fuel may reach the country through global trading firms.

Nayara Energy operates the Vadinar refinery in Gujarat, India's second-largest single-site refinery, with a processing capacity of around 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The company also runs more than 7,000 fuel retail outlets across India and processes large volumes of Russian crude oil.

Russia has been struggling with fuel shortages after dozens of Ukrainian strikes damaged oil refineries, fuel depots and other energy facilities in recent months. These disruptions have forced Moscow to look for alternative fuel supplies, including imports from international markets.

The reported shipments were transported through international traders rather than direct government-to-government sales. Industry sources said at least two cargoes of gasoline refined by Nayara were shipped towards Russia, highlighting the growing role of private trading networks in global fuel markets.
