Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur has once again become the center of controversy after the Rampur Development Authority (RDA) ordered the demolition of 38 of its 40 buildings. Only the Medical College building and one academic block have been exempted from the order.
According to the RDA, nearly 82,309 square meters of construction was carried out without obtaining mandatory approvals from the competent authority. The demolition order was issued under Section 27 of the Uttar Pradesh Urban Planning and Development Act, 1973, following inspections, document verification, and hearings.
The university argued that the buildings were constructed before the area came under the jurisdiction of the RDA, making prior approval from the authority unnecessary. However, the RDA rejected this claim, stating that approval from the competent authority was required under the applicable laws even at that time.
Officials also claimed that the university had obtained approval for two buildings, indicating that it was aware of the legal requirements but failed to secure permission for the remaining structures.
The Samajwadi Party has termed the action politically motivated and said the trust is likely to challenge the demolition order in court. The district administration has directed officials to organize counseling camps for students to minimize disruption to their education.
If the buildings are not removed within 15 days, the administration may proceed with demolition. The matter is now expected to move to the courts, where its legal future will be decided.
