Major Tunnel Accident in Sikkim

A major landslide struck an under-construction tunnel in Samardung, Namchi district of Sikkim on Monday, blocking the tunnel entrance and trapping workers inside.

Officials confirmed that eight workers have died, while 19 others remain trapped. Authorities said the exact number could change as rescue operations continue.

 Rescue Operations Face Challenges

Emergency response teams, including the NDRF, SDRF, police, and fire services, rushed to the site shortly after the incident.

Rescue operations have become difficult due to the suspected presence of methane gas inside the tunnel. Several rescue personnel reportedly experienced dizziness while entering the tunnel, and some lost consciousness, forcing teams to proceed with extreme caution.

Special Rescue Team Deployed

A specialized rescue team equipped with gas-resistant equipment has been brought in to assist the ongoing operation.

Ambulances and medical teams remain stationed nearby to provide immediate treatment to rescued workers.

 Workers Trapped Inside

Authorities believe around 27 workers were inside the tunnel when the landslide occurred. The workers include employees associated with the tunnel construction and the hydroelectric project.

Heavy machinery is being used to remove debris and reach those trapped inside safely.

 Hydropower Project

The tunnel is part of the Teesta Stage-6 Hydroelectric Project currently under construction.

The landslide completely sealed the entrance, making rescue operations extremely complex.

 Methane Gas Risk

Although methane itself is not poisonous, it can significantly reduce oxygen levels inside enclosed spaces, leading to suffocation and unconsciousness.

Additionally, methane is highly flammable and may trigger explosions if exposed to sparks or flames.

Authorities have assured that every effort is being made to rescue the trapped workers safely.
