The Lok Sabha witnessed heated exchanges during the discussion on the Anti-Paper Leak Amendment Bill, 2026, after remarks made by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi sparked protests from members of the ruling party.
The disagreement led to loud protests inside the House and briefly disrupted the proceedings.
Speaking during the debate, Rahul Gandhi praised students who participated in protests against examination paper leaks. He said the demonstrations reflected the hopes and concerns of India's youth rather than anger or hatred. According to him, the movement represented the aspirations of the country's future generation for a fair and transparent examination system.
During his speech, Rahul Gandhi used the word idiot, which immediately drew objections from ruling party MPs. Several members protested, arguing that such language was inappropriate for parliamentary proceedings and demanded that the remark be removed from the official records of the House.
Members of the ruling side stated that parliamentary debates should maintain dignity and respectful language at all times. They argued that expressions considered unparliamentary should not become part of the official proceedings.
Opposition members, however, defended Rahul Gandhi's speech, saying his comments should be viewed in the full context of his address, which focused primarily on students' concerns, examination reforms, and preventing paper leaks.
The debate on the amendment bill continued with both the government and the opposition presenting their views.
The government maintained that the proposed amendments aim to strengthen measures against paper leaks and examination malpractice, while opposition leaders suggested further improvements to better protect students' interests.
The issue added to the already charged political atmosphere in Parliament. After appeals from the Chair, order was restored and discussion on the bill resumed. Political reactions over the controversy are expected to continue.
