New Delhi. A controversy surrounding an alleged ‘purification’ ritual following Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge’s public meeting in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, has reached Parliament.

The issue was raised in the Rajya Sabha, where Kharge spoke about the incident and described the alleged conduct as deeply hurtful and insulting. He questioned whether such behaviour was consistent with the principles of democracy and the Constitution.

The incident reportedly took place after a Congress public meeting at the Ramlila Ground in Haldwani on August 8. According to Kharge, he had spoken about issues related to the government during the rally and had not referred to any particular religion or community in his speech.

Kharge said that despite this, a ritual described as ‘purification’ was allegedly performed at the venue after his speech.

While raising the issue in the Rajya Sabha, Kharge said that he had been a member of Parliament for many years and was performing his responsibilities as Leader of Opposition. He stressed that his speech had focused on government-related issues rather than targeting any particular religious or social community.

Kharge also referred to his social background and said that he belongs to a Scheduled Caste community. He stated that throughout his public life he had never asked anyone to protect him or provide special assistance.

He said he had the strength to fight for his rights and had continued to do so throughout his political career.

However, Kharge said that he was particularly hurt by the alleged ‘purification’ ritual after his public meeting. He questioned how such conduct could be justified in a democratic society and linked the incident to concerns about social discrimination and dignity.

Kharge’s Constitutional Argument

Kharge sought to frame the issue not merely as a political controversy but as a question concerning equality and constitutional values.

He questioned whether an elected public representative should be subjected to such treatment and emphasized the importance of dignity and equality in a constitutional democracy.

His remarks triggered a broader political discussion over caste, social equality and the treatment of public representatives.

Nadda Assures Investigation

Responding to Kharge in the Rajya Sabha, Leader of the House and Union Minister J.P. Nadda described the reported incident as unfortunate.

Nadda said that if such an incident had taken place, it was a matter of concern not only for one political party but for the country as a whole.

He made it clear that the Bharatiya Janata Party does not support such activities and assured Kharge that the matter would be investigated.

Nadda also said that the incident would be looked into at the appropriate level and that the party did not support behaviour that could hurt anyone’s sentiments or dignity.

The assurance from Nadda has now put the focus on the investigation and the facts surrounding the alleged ritual.

Congress Raises Equality Concerns

Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Kumari Selja also reacted strongly to the controversy.

She questioned how claims about equality, constitutional values and national unity could coexist with an alleged purification ritual following the programme of an opposition leader.

She argued that the Constitution guarantees equality to all citizens and that any incident involving alleged discrimination based on social or caste identity deserves serious attention.

Selja also questioned the role of the state government and local authorities, arguing that if such an incident took place, it should be investigated fairly and responsibility should be determined.

The controversy has therefore developed into a wider political debate over equality, dignity and social discrimination.

A Debate Beyond Politics

The Haldwani controversy has also raised questions beyond the immediate political confrontation.
