New Delhi. Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has approached the Supreme Court challenging an order of the Allahabad High Court in a case involving allegations of disproportionate assets.

The petition challenges the order of the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court under which the allegations against Rahul Gandhi were to be verified through central investigative agencies.

Rahul Gandhi has also filed a separate transfer petition seeking to move the proceedings from the Allahabad High Court to the Delhi High Court.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear both petitions on August 17, 2026. The bench will be headed by Chief Justice Justice Surya Kant and will also include Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana.

 What Is the Case About

The matter is linked to a complaint filed by Vignesh Shishir, a BJP worker from Karnataka. The complaint alleges that Rahul Gandhi accumulated assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The complaint subsequently came before the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court. In May 2026, the High Court passed an order concerning verification and examination of the allegations by central investigative agencies.

Rahul Gandhi has now challenged that order before the Supreme Court.

 Role of ED and CBI

The case involves questions concerning the role of the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation in verifying the allegations.

Following the High Court’s order, the agencies were asked to examine the available material and verify the allegations in accordance with the law.

The High Court had also indicated that if any irregularity or material requiring further action was found during the process, the concerned agency could proceed according to law.

The court had expressed dissatisfaction with a report submitted by the CBI and issued directions concerning the further process of verification.

Rahul Gandhi’s Plea

The main petition filed by Rahul Gandhi seeks to challenge the legal basis and effect of the Allahabad High Court order.

His legal team is expected to place its arguments before the Supreme Court regarding the High Court’s directions and the process adopted in the case.

A separate transfer petition seeks to shift the proceedings from the Allahabad High Court to the Delhi High Court.

The Supreme Court will therefore consider two key issues: the challenge to the High Court’s order and the request to transfer the proceedings.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the petitions on August 17.
