A tense situation unfolded in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain on Monday after a rumour about an electric current triggered panic among devotees waiting in a queue for darshan at the Nagchandreshwar Temple, located on the upper floor of the Mahakaleshwar Temple complex. The sudden panic led to a stampede-like situation, during which several devotees fell and sustained injuries.

According to the available information, a large number of devotees were standing in a queue near the Harasiddhi Temple intersection while waiting for darshan at the Shri Nagchandreshwar Temple. During this time, a rumour reportedly spread that an electric current had reached an area near an electrical distribution point located inside the barricaded section.

As soon as the rumour spread, panic gripped the devotees standing in the queue. Several people attempted to move away from the area at the same time, resulting in a sudden rush. The movement of the crowd created a stampede-like situation, with some devotees losing their balance and falling to the ground.

Several people sustained injuries during the incident. Security personnel and staff present at the site intervened to control the crowd and helped move the injured devotees to a safer area. Emergency arrangements were made to provide medical assistance to those who had been hurt.

The injured devotees were subsequently taken to Charak Hospital for treatment. Doctors and medical staff began treating them after they were brought to the hospital.

Those reported to have been injured include Hindu Bai, a resident of Dhancha Bhawan in Ujjain; 19-year-old Sagar, son of Manish, from Kishanpura in Ujjain; Lakshmibai, also from Dhancha Bhawan; Anasuya and her mother Mamta, residents of Ganj Basoda; Harishchandra from Silvasa village; a devotee from Vapi in Gujarat; 18-year-old Sonam from Gwalior; Sujit Kumar from Darbhanga in Bihar; Khushi from Gwalior; and Tulsi and her mother Rekha Bai from Valsad in Gujarat.

Following the incident, security arrangements around the temple complex were strengthened and officials focused on controlling the crowd. Security personnel worked to ensure that the situation did not escalate further and that devotees could move through the area in an orderly manner.

The Nagchandreshwar Temple is located on the upper floor of the Mahakaleshwar Temple complex and attracts large numbers of devotees, particularly during special religious occasions. With large crowds gathered in a confined area, even a rumour can spread rapidly and cause panic.
