The alleged illegal meeting case involving MLA Abbas Ansari and his wife Nikhat at Chitrakoot Jail has taken a significant turn, with the court issuing strict directions regarding the personal appearance of the accused.

The matter was heard on Thursday before the Anti-Corruption Court in Banda. During the hearing, jailer Santosh Kumar was present, while Abbas Ansari, his wife Nikhat, former jail superintendent Ashok Kumar Sagar and other persons connected with the case did not appear before the court.

Applications seeking exemption from personal appearance were submitted on behalf of the concerned accused. The court, however, took a strict view of their repeated absence and fixed September 10 as the next date of hearing.

The court has indicated that the proceedings related to framing of charges will be taken forward on the next date.

 Personal appearance made mandatory

The court has directed all accused persons connected with the case to remain personally present on September 10. It has specifically stated that applications seeking exemption from appearance will not be accepted on that date.

The court has further warned that if any accused fails to appear without permission, a warrant may be issued against them.

The direction assumes significance because Abbas Ansari and Nikhat have reportedly remained absent from the proceedings on several previous occasions. According to the information presented in the case, they have not appeared before the court on around seven occasions.

 Jail warder also summoned

The court has also directed that a warder who was posted at Chitrakoot Jail at the time of the alleged incident be produced before it during the next hearing.

The warder is currently lodged at Agra Central Jail. The court has directed that the superintendent of Agra Central Jail be informed so that the warder's presence can be ensured during the proceedings.

The move is aimed at ensuring the presence of people connected with the case as the court proceeds with the next stage of the legal process.

 Case came to light in February 2023

The matter came to light on February 10, 2023, following a complaint regarding an alleged unauthorised meeting involving Abbas Ansari and his wife Nikhat at Chitrakoot Jail.

Following the complaint, the then district magistrate and superintendent of police conducted a joint raid at the jail. During the inspection, Nikhat was reportedly found inside the office of the jail superintendent.

The incident raised questions about the functioning of the prison administration and the implementation of rules governing meetings with inmates.

The subsequent investigation examined the circumstances surrounding the alleged meeting and the role of various people associated with the prison administration.

 Several people named in the case

During the investigation, a case was registered at Karwi police station against several individuals, including Abbas Ansari, Nikhat, driver Lalak Niyaz, former jail superintendent Ashok Kumar Sagar, jailer Santosh Kumar, deputy jailer Chandrakala, jail canteen operator Navneet Sachan and former Samajwadi Party district president Faraz Khan, among others.

A Special Investigation Team was subsequently constituted at the government level to investigate the matter.

The investigation examined the alleged violation of prison rules, the circumstances surrounding the meeting and the possible role of prison officials and other persons connected with the incident.

 September 10 hearing expected to be important

The next hearing on September 10 is expected to be significant because the court has ordered the personal appearance of all accused persons and indicated that the process concerning the framing of charges will move forward.

The court's latest direction also sends a clear message that repeated absence from proceedings will not be treated lightly.

If any accused fails to appear despite the specific direction for personal appearance, the court may proceed with the issuance of a warrant in accordance with law.
