West Bengal, Tamil Nadu Elections 2026: Voting Underway, Turnout Crosses 78% in Bengal
Voting is underway in two of India’s most closely watched political battlegrounds as West Bengal and Tamil Nadu head to the polls in the 2026 Assembly elections.

Polling began at 7:00 am in both states following mock drills conducted at select booths to ensure smooth functioning of voting systems. Voting is scheduled to continue until 6:00 pm, with officials closely monitoring the process.

In West Bengal, voter turnout crossed 78% by 3:00 pm, indicating strong public participation despite reports of isolated clashes in parts of Murshidabad district. Security has been tightened in sensitive areas to maintain order during the polling process.

The two states are following different election formats. Tamil Nadu is voting in a single phase, meaning all constituencies are deciding their representatives on the same day. West Bengal, however, is conducting elections in two phases, with the next round of voting scheduled for April 29. Results for both states will be announced on May 4.

In Tamil Nadu, the contest is primarily between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the NDA bloc led by AIADMK. The DMK alliance includes Congress, DMDK and VCK, while AIADMK is contesting alongside BJP and PMK.

This election, however, has an added dimension with actor Vijay entering politics through his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. His debut has introduced the possibility of a three-way contest, potentially reshaping the state’s traditional political landscape.

In West Bengal, the stakes are equally high. The ruling Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is seeking a fourth consecutive term in power. The BJP, which made significant gains in the previous election, is aiming to convert its growing support base into a winning mandate.

Beyond these two major states, by-elections are also being held in Gujarat’s Umreth constituency and Maharashtra’s Baramati and Rahuri seats. The results for these contests will be declared along with the assembly election outcomes on May 4.

As voting progresses, attention remains focused on turnout trends, security conditions, and the potential impact of new political entrants and shifting voter sentiments.
