Nice Mayor's Opposition Forces Rethink of 2030 Olympics Ice Hockey Venue
Organisers of the 2030 Winter Olympics are exploring alternative venues for ice hockey events after facing political opposition in Nice, originally designated as the host city for indoor ice competitions.

The coastal city had been selected to host ice hockey matches by converting its main football stadium into a temporary rink. However, the plan has run into resistance from newly elected mayor Eric Ciotti, who opposes the idea of displacing the city’s football club for several months during the tournament.

Ciotti, aligned with far-right political forces, has refused to allow the use of the stadium, arguing that it would disrupt local sports and community interests. His stance has created a deadlock, forcing organisers to reconsider their venue strategy.

As a result, officials are now evaluating alternative locations, including Paris and Lyon, both of which offer existing large-capacity indoor arenas that could host ice hockey matches more efficiently. The move is also seen as a way to reduce costs and logistical challenges associated with building temporary facilities.

Organisers stated that technical, scheduling and financial assessments showed significant limitations with converting other stadiums in Nice, particularly due to high costs and operational impact. This has led them to prioritise existing infrastructure in larger metropolitan areas.

A final decision on the venues is expected in the coming weeks, with recommendations to be presented to the organising committee’s executive board. Confirmation will follow once the International Olympic Committee finalises the list of sports and event locations.

Despite the uncertainty around ice hockey, other events planned for Nice remain unaffected. A second ice rink is still expected to be built at the city’s exhibition centre, ensuring that some Olympic activities will continue to take place there.

The situation highlights the challenges of balancing large-scale international sporting events with local political dynamics, as organisers work to deliver a sustainable and efficient Olympic Games.
