Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi lost the Jorhat Assembly seat to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Hitendranath Goswami by a margin of 23,182 votes, according to results announced on May 4, 2026.
Gogoi, who is the sitting Member of Parliament from Jorhat, secured 46,257 votes, while Goswami polled 69,439 votes to retain the seat for a third consecutive term.
This was Gogoi’s debut in an Assembly election. In contrast, Goswami has represented the constituency multiple times, including three terms as an Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) MLA and two terms as a BJP legislator.
Gogoi currently serves as the deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha and had won the Jorhat parliamentary seat in 2024, defeating BJP candidate Topon Kumar Gogoi by a margin of 1,44,393 votes.
Polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam was conducted in a single phase on April 9.
