An Israeli air strike on Gaza City has killed Azzam Khalil al-Hayya, the son of senior Hamas political leader Khalil al-Hayya, according to Palestinian officials and medical sources.
Attack in Gaza City
The strike targeted the Daraj neighbourhood in Gaza City late on Wednesday night. Medical sources said Azzam Khalil al-Hayya later died from injuries sustained in the attack. At least one other person was killed and several others were wounded during the air raid.
Senior Hamas official Basem Naim confirmed the death in a social media statement.
Khalil al-Hayya responds
Before the death of his son was officially confirmed, Khalil al-Hayya addressed the ongoing attacks, saying that the killing of family members and leaders would not weaken the Palestinian cause.
He stated that all Palestinian families were enduring the same suffering and described his son as one among many victims of the conflict.
Previous losses within the family
Khalil al-Hayya had previously lost three sons in earlier Israeli military operations linked to attempts targeting Hamas leadership. Two were killed during earlier wars in Gaza, while another reportedly died during an operation in Doha last year.
Additional air strikes across Gaza
The attack on Azzam al-Hayya came alongside several other Israeli strikes across Gaza. In the Zeitoun neighbourhood of Gaza City, three members of the same family were reportedly killed while preparing a tent near a mosque. Several others were injured.
Another strike in the al-Mawasi area reportedly killed Naseem al-Kalazani, identified as the head of an anti-narcotics force in Khan Younis. Multiple people were also wounded in that attack.
Hamas condemns the attacks
Hamas described the strikes as a serious violation of the ceasefire agreement reached last year. The group accused Israel of continuing military operations despite ongoing mediation efforts and humanitarian concerns inside Gaza.
Humanitarian crisis continues
According to health officials in Gaza, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire agreement was announced, while thousands more have been wounded.
Large parts of Gaza remain devastated after months of fighting. Humanitarian agencies continue to warn about worsening living conditions, shortages of medical supplies and restrictions affecting aid deliveries across the territory.
Ceasefire talks remain stalled
Israeli officials have reportedly discussed expanding military operations after disagreements over disarmament demands and broader political conditions linked to negotiations.
Hamas has maintained that discussions about weapons should only take place within a broader framework leading to the establishment of a Palestinian state and an end to military operations in Gaza.
