Russia launches over 200 drones at Ukraine after truce expires

Russia and Ukraine resumed aerial attacks after a three-day ceasefire expired, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy saying Moscow launched more than 200 drones overnight.

According to Ukrainian officials, Russian attacks on the Dnipropetrovsk region killed one person and injured four others on Tuesday morning. Authorities also reported strikes on energy infrastructure in the Mykolaiv region, causing power outages, while residential buildings and a kindergarten were damaged near Kyiv.

Additional attacks were reported in the regions of Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv and Zhytomyr.

Zelenskyy accuses Russia of ending truce

Zelenskyy said Russia had chosen to end what he described as a “partial silence” that lasted for several days during the temporary ceasefire.

The Ukrainian president stated that calm had not fully existed even during the truce period, especially along front-line areas.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed its forces intercepted 27 Ukrainian drones over the Belgorod, Voronezh and Rostov regions.

Moscow also accused Ukraine of violating the ceasefire more than 1,000 times, alleging attacks on civilian areas and Russian military positions.

Temporary ceasefire collapses

The 72-hour ceasefire was announced by US President Donald Trump and coincided with Russia’s Victory Day commemorations marking the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

Trump had expressed hope that the truce could become the first step towards broader peace negotiations after more than four years of war.

However, both Moscow and Kyiv repeatedly accused each other of violating the agreement even before it officially ended.

Peace talks remain uncertain

Efforts to restart US-backed peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have made little progress in recent months.

The conflict in the Middle East and the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran have also shifted international diplomatic attention away from the Ukraine war.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently suggested the conflict could be “coming to an end” and said he would consider meeting Zelenskyy after a final peace agreement is reached.

He also warned that Russia’s strategic military forces remain fully prepared amid growing tensions with Western countries.
