Cristiano Ronaldo and Al-Nassr were left heartbroken after a dramatic injury-time own goal by goalkeeper Bento denied them a victory that would have sealed the Saudi Pro League title.
Al-Nassr appeared set for a famous 1-0 win over rivals Al Hilal in Riyadh on Tuesday before disaster struck in the closing seconds. Bento misjudged an overhead save and accidentally pushed the ball into his own net, handing Al Hilal a dramatic equaliser.
The result means Al-Nassr must wait longer to secure their first league title since 2019 and Ronaldo’s first domestic trophy since joining the Saudi club in January 2023.
Ronaldo, watching from the bench when the equaliser arrived, showed visible frustration after the costly mistake. The Portuguese superstar has yet to lift a league title with Al-Nassr despite his high-profile move following the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Al-Nassr remain top of the table with 83 points from 33 matches, while Al Hilal sit second with 78 points and one game remaining in hand.
Fans inside the stadium had arrived expecting celebrations, with supporters dressed in yellow after receiving free Al-Nassr shirts before kickoff.
Despite the setback, Al-Nassr remain favourites to win the title ahead of their final league match against Damac on May 21.
“The dream is close,” Ronaldo wrote on social media after the match.
