World Cup train and shuttle bus fares reduced in New York

Authorities in New York and New Jersey have announced major reductions in transport ticket prices for fans travelling to FIFA World Cup 2026 matches at MetLife Stadium following criticism over the previously announced fares.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill confirmed that round-trip NJ Transit train tickets to the stadium in East Rutherford will now cost $98 instead of the earlier proposed $150. The venue, temporarily renamed New Jersey New York Stadium for the World Cup, will host several matches including the tournament final on July 19.

The decision came after strong backlash from football supporters, many of whom argued that transport costs were becoming too expensive alongside already high match ticket prices, airfare and travel expenses.

Despite the reduction, the temporary World Cup fare remains significantly higher than the standard $13 return journey from New York City’s Penn Station to the stadium area.

Earlier, state officials had defended the higher price, saying the additional charges were necessary to recover operational costs linked to hosting the tournament. NJ Transit officials estimated that transporting fans throughout the World Cup would cost nearly $62 million, with only part of the expenses covered through external funding.

Meanwhile, New York Governor Kathy Hochul also announced a major cut in shuttle bus ticket prices for supporters travelling from New York City to the stadium.

Round-trip shuttle bus fares have now been reduced from $80 to $20. Officials said 20 percent of shuttle bus tickets for every match will be reserved for New York residents, while the remaining tickets will be available to all fans attending the games.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, with the tournament scheduled to begin on June 11.
