Deadly Floods And Landslides Devastate Southern And Central China Regions
At least 10 people have died after torrential rainfall triggered severe flooding and landslides across parts of China, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
The China Meteorological Administration maintained orange alerts for heavy rain and severe storms, warning that the weather system has entered its most dangerous phase.
 
Chinese authorities activated a Level-IV emergency flood response in the provinces of Hunan and Guangxi, while maintaining emergency measures in Hubei, Chongqing, and Guizhou.
According to state broadcaster CCTV, the continuous downpours broke multiple rainfall records, particularly in Hubei province, where 337 townships recorded more than 100 millimetres of rain within just 48 hours.
In Guangxi province, six people lost their lives after a pickup truck carrying 15 passengers plunged into a swollen river during heavy rain. In Hubei, flash floods killed three people in a low-lying village, while another fatality was reported in Hunan province.
 
Videos shared on the Chinese social media platform Douyin showed flooded streets in Jingzhou city, with residents standing knee-deep in water and several vehicles almost completely submerged.
Local authorities have suspended schools, transportation services, and business activities in several affected areas. Rescue teams and emergency workers are carrying out evacuation operations as floodwaters continue to rise.
 
Meteorologists said the extreme rainfall was caused by moisture coming from the Bay of Bengal, the South China Sea, and the Pacific Ocean. The slow-moving weather system intensified rainfall accumulation across a wide area stretching over 1,000 kilometres.
 
The National Meteorological Centre warned that severe weather is expected to continue moving east and south over the coming days, with further heavy rainfall forecast along the Yangtze River basin.
