Rs 2.20 Crore Rewarded Maoist Leader Asim Mandal Surrenders

A major development has been reported in the ongoing anti-Maoist operations in eastern India, with senior Maoist leader Asim Mandal alias Akash surrendering before the police in West Bengal. The Jharkhand Police headquarters has confirmed his surrender.

Mandal, who is also known by several aliases including Timir, Manoj, Deepak and Rakesh, is originally from Uttar Phulchuk in the Chandrakona police station area of West Midnapore, West Bengal. He has been associated with Maoist activities across the Bengal-Jharkhand border region for several years.

The combined reward announced on him by Jharkhand and Odisha stood at Rs 2.20 crore. Jharkhand had announced a reward of Rs 1 crore, while Odisha had announced Rs 1.20 crore. This made Mandal one of the most closely watched Maoist figures in the region.

 Wanted in Around 55 Cases

According to police records, Mandal was wanted in around 55 cases registered at different police stations. The cases are linked to alleged Maoist activities, encounters and attacks involving security forces.

He was particularly active in the Saranda region of West Singhbhum, an area that has remained significant in the history of Maoist activity and counter-insurgency operations. Continued security operations in the region have put increasing pressure on Maoist networks operating in the forests and border areas.

His surrender comes after a series of arrests and surrenders involving Maoist cadres in Jharkhand and West Bengal. Security agencies have been working to identify and dismantle the remaining networks operating across the inter-state border.

 Maoist Network Under Pressure

Mandal's surrender comes at a time when security agencies have intensified operations against Maoist groups in Jharkhand. Several cadres have surrendered in recent months, while a number of senior leaders have been arrested.

Three Maoist members linked to Mandal's squad had also surrendered in Bankura in West Bengal shortly before his surrender. They included regional committee member Ram Prasad Mardi, who carried a reward of Rs 15 lakh, his wife Meeta alias Naintara, who carried a reward of Rs 10 lakh, and another member identified as Gauri.

The surrender of these cadres was followed by reports that Mandal had moved towards West Bengal. Security agencies were subsequently trying to trace his location.

Name Linked to Several Attacks on Security Forces

The name of Asim Mandal and his squad has appeared in investigations related to several encounters and attacks involving security personnel in West Singhbhum and adjoining areas.

On March 1, 2026, an encounter took place in Marangponga under Chhotanagara police station in Chaibasa. Two security personnel, including an assistant commandant of the 209 Cobra Battalion, were reported injured in the incident.

On April 12, 2025, a Jharkhand Jaguar personnel was killed in an incident in Radhapora under Jaraikela police station in Chaibasa. Investigators have examined the alleged role of Maoist cadres in the incident.

On January 11, 2023, an encounter and IED blast took place in Tumbahaka under Tonto police station in West Singhbhum. Nine personnel of the 209 Cobra Battalion were reported injured.

Earlier incidents in the region also included the death of a security personnel in a Maoist attack at Jonwa under Karaikela police station in 2020 and another security personnel being killed in an attack at Jhati Pahadi under MGM police station in East Singhbhum in 2018.

Jharkhand Police Team to Question Him

Following Mandal's surrender, a team of Jharkhand Police is expected to travel to West Bengal to question him. Investigators are likely to focus on his role within the Maoist organisation, the identities and locations of remaining cadres, weapons, ammunition and other material allegedly stored by the organisation.

The questioning may also help security agencies understand the present structure of Maoist networks operating across Jharkhand and West Bengal. Information about communication channels, movement routes and local support networks could also form part of the investigation.

What His Surrender Means for the Ongoing Operations

Mandal's surrender is another significant development in the security agencies' campaign against Maoist networks in Jharkhand. The state has witnessed a series of surrenders and arrests involving senior and mid-level Maoist cadres.

In July 2026, another senior Maoist leader, Misir Besra, who also carried a combined reward of Rs 2.20 crore from Jharkhand and Odisha, was arrested. The arrest and subsequent developments have added to the pressure on the remaining Maoist leadership in the region.

Mandal's surrender could now provide investigators with additional information about the organisation's remaining structure. However, the exact number of active cadres and the current strength of the Maoist network will become clearer only after further investigation and questioning.
