Political preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections have intensified, but an internal dispute within the Samajwadi Party has brought organisational discipline into focus. During a meeting of party leaders and office-bearers from Etah and Kasganj at the SP headquarters in Lucknow, two party leaders reportedly got into a heated argument in the presence of party president Akhilesh Yadav. The disagreement reportedly escalated, with allegations that abusive language was exchanged. Akhilesh Yadav expressed displeasure over the incident and reportedly left the meeting midway after asking party members to maintain discipline.
The meeting had been convened to review the party’s organisational position in Etah and Kasganj and discuss preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections. Around 250 senior leaders, office-bearers and former representatives from the two districts were reportedly present. Party leaders were giving feedback on electoral performance, organisational issues and preparations for the upcoming election. Akhilesh Yadav was present during the meeting as the party leadership reviewed the political situation in the two districts.
According to reports, SP leader Manjeet Yadav began speaking about the party’s performance in the region and the reasons behind its electoral setbacks. Former Etah district panchayat chairman Jugendra Singh Yadav also intervened during the discussion. A disagreement reportedly began over remarks made during the meeting and soon turned into a heated exchange between the two leaders. Other senior members present at the meeting attempted to calm the situation.
Reports further stated that the disagreement escalated to the alleged use of abusive language between the two leaders. The incident reportedly created an uncomfortable atmosphere during the meeting. Akhilesh Yadav then stressed the importance of organisational discipline and the need for party leaders to conduct themselves appropriately. Different reports have provided slightly different details about the exact exchange, but they broadly agree that the disagreement took place in Akhilesh Yadav’s presence and disrupted the meeting.
Reports also attributed a remark about “the heat of money” to Akhilesh Yadav during his reaction to the dispute. The reported comment was presented in the context of criticism of alleged indiscipline and the behaviour of leaders who, according to the reports, were acting independently because of their financial influence. The exact wording varies across reports. Akhilesh Yadav subsequently left the meeting before its scheduled conclusion.
The party then took organisational action in both districts. An order issued by SP state president Shyamlal Pal dissolved the district organisations of Etah and Kasganj with immediate effect. The action included the district presidents and district executive committees. It also covered the district-level units of various frontal organisations and their office-bearers. SP functionaries and members from the two districts who were part of the state-level organisation were also reported to have been relieved of their organisational positions.
The action therefore extended beyond the two district presidents involved in the organisational structure. According to the reported order, district committees, frontal organisations and related office-bearers were all brought under the reorganisation process. The move means that the party will now have to rebuild its organisational structure in both districts.
The selection of new district teams and the distribution of organisational responsibilities will therefore become an important part of the party’s next phase of preparation.
The two leaders involved in the dispute were also reported to have apologised afterwards and described themselves as disciplined party workers. However,
there has been no indication in the available reports that the organisational action was withdrawn. Local party functionaries said that the leadership’s decision would be respected and that new organisational structures would be formed.
The political background of Etah and Kasganj also adds significance to the organisational changes.
In the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, BJP candidates won all four Assembly constituencies in Etah district-Etah, Aliganj, Jalesar and Marhara. Kasganj district has three Assembly constituencies -Kasganj, Amanpur and Patiyali. In the 2022 election, BJP won Kasganj and Amanpur, while the Samajwadi Party won Patiyali.
The organisational shake-up has come at a time when the Samajwadi Party is preparing its campaign structure for the 2027 election.
The party is focusing on strengthening its organisation, improving coordination among local leaders and preparing for constituency-level campaigning. Dissolving the units in two districts now means that the party leadership will have to simultaneously rebuild the local structure and maintain coordination among workers as the election preparations continue.
The incident has brought questions of internal coordination and discipline within the party’s local organisation into the spotlight. For the SP leadership, the immediate organisational task is to create new teams in Etah and Kasganj and establish a functioning structure ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
The manner in which the new organisational committees are formed and how local leaders are brought together will remain an important part of the party’s preparations in these districts.
