Indian Railways has taken a major step to strengthen its technical and supervisory workforce by creating 5,664 new posts. The posts were approved following clearance from the Finance Ministry and include positions across technical, operational and commercial departments.
Of the total 5,664 newly created posts, 2,292 are at Level-6 and 3,372 are at Level-7. The posts are expected to be filled in phases rather than through a single recruitment exercise. In the first phase, recruitment for 2,832 posts is planned.
Along with the newly created positions, the Railways is also moving ahead with the process of filling 21,978 existing vacancies. The proposal is to begin the second phase of recruitment for the newly sanctioned posts after around 80 percent of the existing vacancies have been filled.
The restructuring is aimed at improving staffing levels in technical and supervisory areas while reorganising the existing workforce structure according to operational requirements.
### Major share for technical departments
Engineering and technical departments account for a significant portion of the newly created positions. In the Civil Engineering department, 424 Junior Engineer posts and 860 Senior Section Engineer posts have been included.
The Electrical department will have 364 new Junior Engineer posts and 739 Senior Section Engineer posts. In the Mechanical department, 265 Junior Engineer and 537 Senior Section Engineer posts have been sanctioned.
The Signal and Telecom department will also receive 336 Junior Engineer and 683 Senior Section Engineer posts.
The creation of these positions is intended to strengthen technical manpower and provide additional personnel for supervision, maintenance and operational responsibilities across the railway network.
### New positions in operations and commercial departments
The restructuring also includes a significant number of posts in the Operations and Commercial departments.
As part of the sanctioned positions, 533 posts of Station Master and Controller have been included. Another 356 posts have been allocated for Station Superintendent and Chief Controller positions.
In the Commercial department, 334 posts of Chief Commercial-cum-Ticket Supervisor and 143 posts of Commercial Superintendent have been included.
These positions are expected to support station operations, passenger-related services and commercial activities across the railway system.
### Existing workforce structure to be reorganised
Along with the creation of new posts, the Railways is also restructuring its existing manpower framework. According to the information available, 10,939 lower-level posts are being surrendered as part of the restructuring exercise.
The move is aimed at reorganising the workforce according to changing operational and technical requirements. The creation of new technical and supervisory posts is part of this broader exercise to redistribute manpower and strengthen key areas.
### 1,023 supernumerary posts for employees with disabilities
The Railway Board has also issued an important order concerning promotion-related rights of employees with disabilities.
Under the order, 1,023 supernumerary posts have been created for notional promotions. These include 38 gazetted and 985 non-gazetted posts.
The move is intended to provide the necessary post structure for implementing eligible promotion benefits for employees with disabilities.
### What does the development mean for job seekers?
The creation of 5,664 new posts is significant for candidates preparing for railway recruitment examinations. However, the creation of posts does not mean that applications for all 5,664 positions have opened simultaneously.
Details such as eligibility criteria, application dates, examination schedules, selection procedures and department-wise vacancies will be known through the respective official recruitment notifications.
Candidates should therefore wait for the relevant official notification before applying or relying on specific recruitment dates.
With the existing 21,978 vacancies also being processed and the newly sanctioned positions planned to be filled in phases, the Railways is expected to expand staffing in technical, operational and supervisory areas.
