Tel Aviv:A routine flight turned into a frightening emergency when Indian pilot Smit Machchhar was seriously injured during an attack inside a Flydubai aircraft. Amid the chaos, Israeli dentist Shota Musayev, who was travelling as a passenger, stepped forward and provided critical assistance to the injured pilot.
According to the account of the incident, the co-pilot allegedly attacked Smit Machchhar with an emergency crash axe inside the cockpit. The Indian pilot suffered serious injuries to his head, neck and hands, resulting in heavy bleeding.
Musayev was reportedly the only person with medical training among the passengers who immediately stepped forward to assist the injured pilot.
Dentist rushed towards the cockpit
Musayev recalled hearing screams coming from the cockpit. He immediately moved towards the area to understand what had happened.
After helping others restrain the attacker, he turned his attention to the injured pilot. When he saw Smit lying on the floor with blood coming from his head and left hand, he immediately began providing first aid.
The situation was extremely challenging because the aircraft had limited medical resources. Musayev had to rely on whatever was available inside the plane.
Used a T-shirt to control bleeding
The dentist said that the pilot was suffering from deep wounds and was losing a significant amount of blood. He initially used a T-shirt to apply pressure to the wounds.
However, the bleeding did not stop. Every time he removed the cloth to check the injury, the bleeding became heavier. He therefore continued applying pressure and used ice packs to help control the bleeding.
Musayev said he maintained pressure for nearly *45 minutes* while trying to keep the injured pilot stable until the aircraft could land.
'Don't sleep, we need you'
As the pilot's condition became critical, Musayev focused not only on his physical injuries but also on keeping him conscious.
He repeatedly asked Smit not to fall asleep and tried to keep him engaged in conversation. He asked about his family and children and continued reassuring him that he would return safely to his family.
The injured pilot reportedly asked Musayev for help and expressed fear that he might die. The dentist continued reassuring him and told him that everything would be fine.
Pilot's pulse became dangerously low
At one point, Smit's pulse reportedly dropped significantly. Musayev raised his legs in an attempt to improve his condition, after which his pulse returned.
The dentist later noticed that the pilot's lips were turning blue. He immediately informed the crew that the aircraft needed to land as quickly as possible.
According to Musayev, the situation had become extremely serious and he feared that the pilot did not have much time.# Avoided unnecessary movement and medication
Musayev said he was hesitant to move the injured pilot because he was concerned that unnecessary movement could trigger more bleeding.
Although there was a discussion about giving the pilot medication for pain, Musayev decided against it because of the severity of the injuries and the ongoing blood loss.
He instead focused on keeping the pilot conscious, controlling the bleeding and providing small amounts of water when possible.
Nearly 40 minutes in the air after the attack
The aircraft remained in the air for around 40 minutes after the attack before reaching Saudi Arabia. During this period, Musayev continued to monitor and assist the injured pilot.
After landing, the injured captain was handed over to medical professionals on the ground. Musayev then stepped back after spending a significant part of the flight helping keep the pilot stable.
Before parting, he reportedly encouraged Smit and wished him well.
'He saved our lives, and we saved his'
Musayev described Smit Machchhar as a hero and praised his actions during the emergency. He said that the pilot's efforts were crucial in protecting the passengers aboard the aircraft.
For Musayev, helping the pilot was a matter of basic human responsibility. He described the incident as an example of how people can come together during an emergency.
The dentist's efforts during those crucial minutes became an important part of the dramatic sequence of events. While the pilot was responsible for protecting the passengers during the crisis, Musayev and others on board worked to keep the injured captain alive until professional medical help became available.
