New Delhi: Three new judges took oath as judges of the Supreme Court on Tuesday, October 6. The newly appointed judges are Justice Sunita Agarwal, Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh
With their appointment, the total number of serving judges in the Supreme Court has increased to 37. Among the 37 judges, only three are women.
The three judges took the oath of office during a formal ceremony and officially assumed their responsibilities as judges of the country's highest court.
Supreme Court strength rises to 37
The appointment of three new judges has increased the working strength of the Supreme Court to 37 judges.
The appointment is significant for the functioning of the country's highest judicial institution, particularly as the court continues to hear a large number of cases involving constitutional, legal, administrative and public-interest issues.
The addition of new judges is also expected to strengthen the court's various benches and help in the effective hearing of cases.
Justice Sunita Agarwal joins the Supreme Court
Justice Sunita Agarwal has extensive judicial experience and previously served as a judge of a High Court.
Her elevation to the Supreme Court marks an important step in her judicial career. She will now be part of benches hearing significant legal and constitutional matters at the national level.
Her appointment also means that the number of women judges in the Supreme Court remains at three.
Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya takes oath
Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya has also joined the Supreme Court after serving in the High Court judiciary.
During his judicial career, he has dealt with a wide range of legal matters. His experience will now be brought to the Supreme Court, where he will hear cases involving important legal and constitutional questions.
His appointment is expected to add further judicial experience to the court's benches.
Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh becomes Supreme Court judge
Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh is the third judge to join the Supreme Court in the latest appointments.
He also has considerable experience in the High Court judiciary. As a Supreme Court judge, he will now hear cases involving important questions of law and matters affecting citizens across the country.
His appointment completes the latest addition of three judges to the Supreme Court.
Only three women among 37 judges
With the latest appointments, the Supreme Court has 37 serving judges, of whom only three are women.
The representation of women in the higher judiciary has remained an important issue of discussion in India. While the appointment of women judges has increased over the years, their overall representation at the highest level of the judiciary remains relatively low.
Justice Sunita Agarwal's appointment is therefore significant in the context of women's representation in the Supreme Court.
However, with only three women among 37 judges, the gender representation in the country's highest court continues to remain a matter of public discussion.
Important responsibilities ahead
The Supreme Court deals with some of the most important legal and constitutional matters in the country. Its responsibilities include interpreting the Constitution, deciding disputes between different authorities, hearing fundamental rights cases and examining important legal questions.
The three newly appointed judges will therefore have significant responsibilities ahead.
Their experience in the High Court judiciary will now be used in dealing with cases before the country's highest court. Their appointment is expected to contribute to the functioning of the Supreme Court and its various benches.
The swearing-in of the three judges marks another important development in the composition of the Supreme Court and adds fresh judicial experience to the institution.
